When auditing surgical or diagnostic services, the location of service matters—significantly. In this session, we’ll unpack the key differences between Ambulatory Surgical Centers (ASC) and in-office procedure suites, focusing on how those differences impact reimbursement, documentation, coding, and compliance.
We’ll explore how payer guidelines and Medicare policy influence what is billable—and how—depending on the setting and how to research approved places of service. We'll also highlight credentialing considerations for performing certain services in each environment, as well as touch briefly on what it means for a facility to have (or need) a Certificate of Need (CON).
Whether you’re performing pre-bill reviews or retrospective audits, this session will give you the insight to assess not just what was done, but where and how it was documented and billed.
Learning Objectives:
Differentiate between ASC and procedure suite billing rules and how these impact code selection and modifier use.
Evaluate how place of service affects reimbursement, especially in relation to the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule and ASC payment systems.
Identify documentation expectations for each setting and recognize red flags when billing doesn’t align with the site of service.
Understand basic credentialing requirements for procedures in office-based vs. ASC environments and how this can influence audit outcomes.
